At a glance

What is Ultherapy for Special Areas?

Ultherapy for Special Areas is ultrasound lifting for three areas outside the usual facial plan: the décolleté (upper chest), the backs of the hands and the temples. The device is the same, but each area has thinner skin, less fat or bone and nerves close by, so transducers, intensity and line spacing are set area by area.

On the décolleté, 1.5 and 3.0 mm are the main depths for sun-damaged texture and horizontal lines. On the backs of the hands, treatment centres on 1.5 mm and 4.5 mm is not applied. At the temples the weight is on 3.0 mm, and 4.5 mm is used only once the facial nerve avoidance zone is confirmed on DeepSEE real-time imaging.

How long does Ultherapy for Special Areas take?

Ultherapy for Special Areas takes 20-40 minutes, and a décolleté session is around 30 minutes. Daily activities can resume right after it. Tell us which area matters most and your travel dates, because the consultation first settles whether that area is suitable.

What are the limits of Ultherapy for Special Areas?

The same degree of change as on the face is hard to expect in some special areas, because fewer depths can be used and the number of lines is kept low. RESUM stays within the safety margin instead of raising the intensity, and Dr. Jin-Young Kim explains what is realistic for each area. Areas without an established indication are discussed separately, including whether treatment applies at all.

Purpose & suitability

Fine horizontal lines or loss of firmness on the décolleté bother you.

The skin on the backs of your hands has thinned and its texture stands out.

You want to address hollow temples or firmness along the side of the face.

You want areas beyond the face treated conservatively, with avoidance zones respected.

You would like to hear the indication and limits of each area before deciding.

Treatment process

  1. Suitability check. Dr. Jin-Young Kim examines skin thickness and the structures to avoid in the area you want treated, then sets the scope and the limits.
  2. Avoidance plan. Lines and transducers are mapped around the facial nerve at the temples, the veins on the backs of the hands, and the sternum and ribs on the décolleté.
  3. Conservative treatment. Nerves, veins and bone are confirmed on DeepSEE imaging, and thin areas receive mostly 1.5 and 3.0 mm.
  4. Aftercare briefing. The skin is soothed, then we cover care for each area and sun protection for skin that is usually exposed.

Time & recovery

Mild redness or marks on the décolleté subside within a few days. After hand treatment, avoid rubbing or pressing firmly on the backs of your hands for a few days.

For about a week, keep saunas and heat away from the treated area. The décolleté and hands are often uncovered, so use sun protection carefully, including while sightseeing.

Texture on the décolleté and hands can change more slowly than on the face and usually builds over several months. The effect tends to be most noticeable around 2-3 months.

Limitations & precautions

Intensity and depth are set separately for each area, because skin thickness and the structures to avoid are different on the décolleté, hands and temples.

Temporary swelling, tightness, slight bruising and irritation can occur and settle within 1-2 weeks. Hyperpigmentation or temporary irritation has been reported in rare cases.

Results vary from person to person and from area to area.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit this treatment into a short stay in Seoul?

Yes, Ultherapy for Special Areas takes 20-40 minutes and daily activities can resume right after it. Plan for about a week without saunas or heat on the treated area, and protect the décolleté and hands from the sun.

Which areas count as special areas at RESUM?

At RESUM Plastic Surgery Clinic the special areas are the décolleté (upper chest), the backs of the hands and the temples. The décolleté has had a U.S. FDA indication for fine lines on the chest since 2014, and for areas outside an indication the doctor explains whether treatment applies.

Why is the change milder than on the face?

Special areas have thin dermis and little fat, so fewer depths can be used and fewer lines are placed. The 4.5 mm depth is left out on the backs of the hands and used sparingly elsewhere, which keeps treatment inside the safety margin but limits how much change to expect.

Who plans the depth for each area?

Dr. Jin-Young Kim plans depth and line placement in a 1:1 consultation at RESUM in Gangnam. The plan starts from what must be avoided: the facial nerve at the temples, the veins on the backs of the hands, and the sternum and ribs on the décolleté.

When will I notice a difference after I go home?

Some change is visible right after Ultherapy for Special Areas, and the effect tends to be most noticeable around 2-3 months as collagen forms over 2-6 months. Texture on the décolleté and hands may take longer than the face. The overview figure for how long it lasts is about 12 months.
