At a glance

What is Thermage for Neck Lines?

Thermage for Neck Lines uses Thermage FLX, a monopolar radiofrequency device at about 6.78MHz, on neck skin, which is thinner than facial skin. Warming the dermis supports a gradual softening of horizontal lines and a gain in firmness, with no incisions.

The neck is planned differently from the face. The thyroid gland and airway sit in the midline, and the carotid artery and facial nerve branches run along the sides, so the doctor works from the sides and uses short pulses at a low intensity near the jaw border.

How long does Thermage for the neck take?

The neck alone takes about 30-50 minutes, and numbing cream needs a further 30-40 minutes before that. If the face is treated in the same visit, allow about 1-2 hours including numbing time. You can go back to your day right afterwards, so the appointment can sit alongside other plans.

What can Thermage not change on the neck?

Thermage does not reduce the platysma muscle, so thick vertical bands are not corrected by it. Botox is the usual partner for those bands, and very deep horizontal lines often need fillers or skin boosters too.

A double chin that is mostly fat is also beyond its range, and a fat-reduction treatment or facelift surgery is considered alongside. Sagging that comes from posture, such as a forward head position, needs posture management and exercise as well as treatment.

Purpose & suitability

Horizontal neck lines and a general loss of firmness have appeared together.

You have looked after your face with lifting treatments but never the neck.

You want to firm neck skin in steps, without surgery or incisions.

You have bands or posture-related sagging and want to hear which combination makes sense.

Treatment process

  1. Consultation. Skin thickness, the depth of horizontal lines, platysma bands, the position of the thyroid gland and your posture are checked to separate what Thermage will address from what it will not.
  2. Safety map. Treatment paths are drawn along the sides so that the midline is left out, and short pulses at a lower intensity than for the face are set where nerve branches pass.
  3. Numbing and treatment. With the numbing cream working, the dermis of the neck is heated in broad passes, and intensity drops further in the thinnest zones.
  4. Before you leave. You hear about combination options such as Botox or fillers if they apply, posture advice, and when the next treatment could be.

Time & recovery

A little swelling and redness for about 1-3 days, sometimes with tightness, is usual. In rare cases it lingers mildly for up to 1-2 weeks, and mild bruising is rare.

For about 1 week, do not rub the neck firmly, and limit saunas and hot compresses.

The neck is slow to show its result. Some change is visible right after treatment and new collagen builds over 4-6 months. Because the neck moves all day, assess the result over a longer period than you would for the face.

Limitations & precautions

People with an implanted electrical device such as a pacemaker, or with a metal implant around the neck, may be excluded from treatment.

The dermis of the neck is thinner than that of the face, and nerves and blood vessels lie close by. Intensity is therefore kept below the facial standard, and pain or swelling that persists on one side should be reported to the clinic.

Results depend on neck skin thickness and the pattern of lines. Dr. Jin-Young Kim sets the intensity and the treatment area in the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have my neck and face treated on the same day?

Yes. Neck and face can be treated in one visit, which takes about 1-2 hours including numbing time. The neck alone takes about 30-50 minutes plus 30-40 minutes of numbing, and the neck is always set at a lower intensity than the face.

How is the thyroid protected during neck Thermage?

The midline of the neck, where the thyroid gland lies, is left out of the treatment area. The doctor approaches from the sides only, and along the jaw border, where facial nerve branches pass, uses short pulses at a conservative intensity while checking your feedback.

Will it remove deep neck rings or bands?

Not on its own. Thermage gradually reduces the depth of horizontal lines by firming the dermis, but very deep lines often need fillers or skin boosters, and thick vertical bands come from the platysma muscle and are usually paired with Botox.

Can it fix a double chin?

Only partly. Thermage helps refine the surface contour under the chin, but it has limits when a double chin is mainly fat. In that case a fat-reduction treatment or facelift surgery is considered as well, and the doctor assesses the skin and the fat separately.

When will my neck show the result after I fly home?

Expect the main change over 4-6 months, after you are home. Some tightening is visible right after neck Thermage, and because the neck is in constant motion it is advisable to wait longer than you would for the face before judging.
